A majority of respondents to CNN's "Crossfire" poll support the border patrol agents detaining Jose Antonio Vargas
Yesterday, CNN’s “Crossfire” posted the poll results for its fire back question of “Should Jose Antonio Vargas have been detained today?”
Based on the poll results, 64% of the respondents believe the border patrol agents should have detained Vargas while 36% believe the border patrol agents should not have detained him.
Vargas, who is a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, was brought to the country illegally when he was a child.
However, after Vargas became an adult, he did not obtain legal documents to remain in the country.
Before the poll results were announced, Van Jones said that his “outrage of the day” was the border patrol agents detaining Vargas.
Jones expressed anger and confusion at how the border patrol agents could detain someone like Vargas who is well known.
“If you’ve been feeling inexplicably safer today, there may be a reason for that our border police grabbed that awful fugitive Jose Antonio Vargas and locked him up. That’s right, the Pulitzer Prize winning reporter. The same guy who started the CNN film Documented, America’s most famous dreamer,” said Van Jones.
Van Jones highlighted the complexity of the immigration issue and how some people, who were brought to the U.S. as children, are in a similar position as Vargas and are unable to qualify for the federal government's program Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).
DACA stops the deportation process for some young children who were brought to the country illegally.
“This is a guy who came into this country as a young child. He knows no other home but America. But, he’s too old to qualify for DACA-So fortunately, we can say that Vargas was released today by the border patrol, but his detention was a total waste of time and a total waste of money and a total outrage,” Van Jones said.
Newt Gingrich, on the other hand, took a different view. Gingrich stated that Vargas’ fame does not mean he has the right to break the law: “Well, I’m not sure if it’s a total outrage, but I think it poses a very serious challenge when you’re asked for your documents by the border patrol, you don’t have them. And now you’re saying ‘Oh, but as long as he’s famous, he should go ahead and break the law.’ But let me just say, ‘Let’s check and see how the country felt about it.’”
